Today is the World Children’s Day and the theme is “REPORT – CHILD ONLINE PROTECTION PORTAL LAUNCH.” We have decided to celebrate this day by providing insights on online child protection.

We have often seen photos and videos of children sexually abused online making rounds on social networks such as WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. Some people think by sharing such images they are ‘helping’ the victim (child) while others share such content as a reminder to the community on role to protect children. Yet there are also those who record and share this content for fun, entertainment and even business.

The fact is, sharing of these images re-victimise children and does not help them as we may believe. When every photo or video containing sexual abuse content of a child is uploaded, shared or viewed, the child is re-victimised by that same abuse, over and over. This child is alive and has suffered a lot of violence.

An instance is given today of a video making rounds on local social media accounts. A child is see on inappropriate shaking and dancing on the floor. You could hear a voice on the video calling, “Dorca, who taught you?” … the interview goes on and you can hear loud laughters. Sharing of this video violates this child rights whose face can be clearly identified besides their real name which is clearly stated.

It is clear that there are issues in this child’s parenting but the solution is not sharing this video. Instead, people who know the girl’s parents need to give them information on parenting and not shame the child. Social media users can help protect children affected by online sexual abuse by providing reporting such content here:Child Online Portal
